NORTH – Our Road-Trip to Scotland

Part four: The North

Thirteenth stage: Isle of Skye — North

The “thirteenth” stage lived up to its name as the unlucky number.

After a great night in the roof tent and a promising morning, Malte, Jesse and I wanted to visit the Old Man of Storr. And in the car park in front of it, I crashed into a huge motorhome while reversing.

We spent the next few hours gluing the tail light back together from the thousand jigsaw pieces and tape. It doesn’t look great, but it will hold until we can fit a new one. So we left Skye — now we had to travel all the way north, via Dingwall to Talmine, our home base for the next few days.

Fourteenth stage: Let’s explore the north

If you can take the dog for a walk on a beach like this right after waking up, it’s going to be a great day. Malte, Jesse and I live in a tiny house in the small town of Talmine and from there it’s an hour’s drive to Durness with its Caribbean beach. And of course we visited the Smog Cave.

Fifteenth stage: North — Arisaig

Dogs have a mind of their own – we noticed that again when we left the north. Whenever we are in one place for a while, Jesse feels at home there and has no desire at all to go back on the road. He demonstratively lies down and ignores all activities of packing and loading. But we had to leave our cosy little house in Talmine and head south again, and it was another six hour drive to the campsite in Arisaig. But the weather was perfect and we had a delicious extended lunch break in the sunshine at the wonderful The Pier in Lairg.
