Bluey, the fjord blue super classic

Blue is beautiful. Especially when it’s painted in fjord blue metallic and has a cosy blue plush interior. Bluey is one of the last Volvo 240s produced in 1993, and she is something very special: a Swiss-spec Super Classic with the B230FX engine, which means she has 135 hp under the bonnet and a limited-slip differential.

The love story with Bluey began by chance when I stumbled across an ad on Mobile.de. We weren’t looking for a new car any more, but I had saved the search query. Just like you do when you’re particularly interested in a topic. The ad was unspectacular, but the color stood out. I had never seen this blue on a Volvo 240 before.

When I looked at the car at the seller’s – after a two-hour drive and in the pouring rain – it was immediately clear to me that this was something very special. The color was gorgeous, and if the rust was okay, I would buy it. There are two places I always look first when checking a Volvo 240 station wagon: The rear panel under the tailgate: perfect. Under the rear seat, well: a spotted sheet metal in one place. But otherwise – completely rust-free. The fact that it unfortunately has an automatic transmission didn’t bother me then.

Of course, there were a few things that needed to be repaired. The exhaust was completely gone and a few other small things like the water pump were broken. But the price was good. What I noticed afterwards: As is so often the case, the mileage on the odometer was not correct at all, but that was easy to get over: Bluey looks gorgeous, her plush blue interior is as beautiful as on the first day, and at some point she got a partial paint job that made her look like new from the outside.

I realized that she was a very special lady when we went to the registration office: 100 kW? That’s 135 hp, 20 hp more than normal. “Super Classic” in this case means that she also has a super engine. But you don’t notice the extra power. The automatic swallows it all up again. That’s why, like all Volvo 240s, it’s more of a relaxed cruiser than a race car.

We love Bluey. She’s the most beautiful car in our stable. Since we have Bluey, she has only seen a few raindrops twice. In the winter, she is deregistered and sleeps in the garage. She is our shiny Volvo 240 for special occasions. And she will never be sold.
