NORTH – Our Road-Trip to Scotland
Part three: Lewis and Harris

Eighth stage: Skye — Harris
Some days start like a nightmare and end wonderfully. After half a nervous breakdown and endless pushing in the early morning, Ruby was finally running properly again. And we reached the ferry to Harris on time. And in Harris we were greeted by perfect weather and the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen.
Harris seems like a fairytale land to me. We first drove a bit south and were overwhelmed by the incredible colours of the landscape. Then north to Lewis to visit the mystical Callanish Stones. Finally we arrived in Stornoway and there we are now resting a bit in a small cosy house on the peninsula. The evening light was great and I had to go shopping – so I took the camera with me and found some super nice spots around here.

Ninth stage: North of Lewis.
On the next day we made a trip north to the Butt of Lewis and the huge Traig Mhòr beach. What looked so close on the map was another three-hour drive altogether, but totally worth it. And we have identified the culprit: We now know why Rose won’t start in the wet. The distributor cap has probably reached the end of its life. We’ll have to get a new one on the mainland.

Tenth stage: Lewis — Harris
We had to leave our cosy cabin in Stornoway and headed south to Harris for another Volvo camper session. The weather was perfect again and Jesse, Malte and I visited the beautiful west coast of Lewis with the Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Then up to Harris where we pitched the roof tent at Nisabost Beach.

Eleventh stage: South of Harris
Today it was typical Hebridean weather again — all in one day. The morning was rainy, but then the sun came through and we were able to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Nisabost. Before that Malte and I bought some coffee and vegan pastries in the delicious Loomshed Hebridean Deli.
Then we drove to Rodel in the very south. And we are still totally in love with the southern part of Harris, the landscape, the beaches, the colours are just incredible.

Twelfth stage: Last day on Harris
Malte and I agree: our last day on Harris was just perfect. Malte wanted to try something new, we still had four hours until check-in on the ferry and Hushinish sounded fun. And then it was just an amazing trip with great views over the sea, crystal clear waterfalls and a beautiful beach at the end.
All good days come to an end and this end was perfect too. After our ferry ride to Skye, we wild camped for the first time and it was much easier than expected, even with the roof tent. Okay, many places were already taken, but we found a super nice spot in the north of Skye.
