NORTH – Our Road-Trip to Scotland
Part five: A long way back

Sixteenth stage: Arisaig — Laggan
Sometimes you don’t sleep very well in a roof tent. Last night there was a storm and lashing rain in Arisaig and Malte was shaken in the roof tent while Jesse and I in the boot didn’t notice much. Since there was no petrol station nearby, we drove back to Fort William after drying up and had super delicious vegan lunch there at the great The Wildcat in Fort William. Then back to the highlands to Laggan again. Jesse is having trouble with skin irritations, so Malte gave him a good powdering.

Seventeenth stage: Laggan — Durham
Yesterday, Malte, Jesse and I finally had to leave the beloved Scottish highlands and gradually make our way back south. Our first stop on the way back is the lovely town of Durham with its cathedral, castle and Harry Potter locations.

Eighteenth stage: A wet day in Yorkshire
There it was again, the typical English summer. We started in Durham, then to the North York Moors, to Scarborough and finally to York itself. And everything in the rain, from drizzle to lashing. And Malte with a bit of rally action.

Nineteenth stage: Yorkshire — Kent
Yesterday we munched some miles, arrived in the south in the best weather and visited Canterbury, the last stop on our journey through Great Britain. Slowly we have to say goodbye to the adventures of left-hand traffic, because tonight we are heading back to mainland Europe.

Twentieth stage: Kent — Gent
And that was it, our last day on the island. We had a sunny day at the Folkestone beach and then we took Le Shuttle back to the mainland. And I actually took the wrong turn into one of the first roundabouts! Super nice evening in Gent where we probably saw more young people at once than on the whole trip

Twenty-first and last stage: Gent – Home
It’s time to go home. After a great last evening in Gent, a good night at the Hotel Torenhof and a delicious vegan breakfast at Greenway Gent, Malte has been driving home for the last six hours.
It’s over. It feels good to be back safely and Jesse is happy to have his familiar routine and surroundings back, but somehow it’s also sad that the trip is over.
Fortunately, we now have a few more days to unpack, clean out, rest and repair Ruby, the brave workhorse that brought us there and back without any major problems.
